Consumption down, trade value high as inflation bitesSpeaking from the OIV - L'Organizzazione Internazionale della Vigna e del Vino headquarters in Dijon, by web conference, Director General John Barker presented the State of the World Vine and Wine sector in 2023.In 2023, the global vine and wine sector faced tough challenges. With historically low production volumes and rising prices, the year was defined by the lingering effects of the global inflationary pressures that started in 2022.Key Highlights• Vineyard Surface Area: The world’s vineyard surface area continued its decline, shrinking by 0.5% from 2022 to 7.2 million hectares. This trend, observed for the third consecutive year, was driven by the removal of vineyards in major vine-growing regions (including all types of grapes) across both hemispheres.• Wine production: Extreme climatic conditions and widespread fungal diseases severely impacted many vineyards worldwide, culminating in a historically low global wine production of 237 million hectolitres. This marked a 10% drop from 2022 and represented the lowest output since 1961.• Wine Consumption: Global wine consumption in 2023 is estimated at 221 million hectolitres, indicating a decrease of 2.6% compared to 2022’s already low figures. The spike in production and distribution costs, driven by inflationary pressures, led to higher wine prices for consumers, who were already dealing with diminished purchasing power. Despite these challenges, a few major markets demonstrated resilience.• International trade in wine: The international trade in wine in 2023 was also notably affected by the rise in prices. Although the total volume of wine exported dropped to 99 million hectolitres, this was offset by a high export value, which reached 36 billion euros. The average price per litre of export wine hit a record high of 3.62 euros per litre.https://lnkd.in/d5k_HpPm

In Florence at the Logge Uffizi Corti, headquarter of the Accademia dei Georgofili, were celebrated the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the OIV - L'Organizzazione Internazionale della Vigna e del Vino in the presence of the President Prof. Luigi Moio. The event was organized by Accademia Italiana della Vite e del Vino Over the course of one hundred years, the OIV - L'Organizzazione Internazionale della Vigna e del Vino has had the great merit of having developed a scientific doctrine based on 1432 resolutions in which there is a sound and rigorous logic that has allowed the development of viticulture and quality wine at an international level, thanks to the contribution of thousands of experts and researchers from many universities and research centres around the world. In a century there has been a continuous growth of the member countries thanks to the constant and effective diplomatic work carried out by all the directors general who have succeeded one another at the helm of the OIV.This was the opportunity to anticipate the analysis of the state of the wine sector that will be presented in detail on April 25 by the general manager John Barker. Register now: https://lnkd.in/duu6e9aXIn the last few years, the global wine sector has been facing one of the most challenging periods in its recent history. Extreme weather conditions linked to climate change are increasingly causing significant damage to harvests in all major wine producing regions worldwide, as evidenced by the small production of 2023, the lowest since 1961. On the demand side, global wine consumption has been sharply declining since 2018. This downturn has affected also international trade, which is giving the first signs of a slowdown after years of consistent growth. The export volumes in 2023 were the lowest recorded in the last fifteen years, a decline that can be partially attributed to the global inflationary crisis that began in 2022.For over a century, the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (#OIV), through its Department of Statistics and with the fundamental contribution of the expert groups in statistics (#Statco) and economics (#Ecomar), has been providing economic and statistical analysis of the global wine sector by publishing four annual reports. This work is of paramount importance to the industry, establishing the OIV as one of the global references for wine-related data.#LiendelaVigne #Observer #oiv100#research#viticulture#vine#wine#oenology#economy#law#safety#health#consumer #accademiageorgofili #accademiaitalianaviteevino

LA FILIÈRE VITICOLE FACE À LA DIMINUTION DE CONSOMMATION DE VIN : CONSTAT ET PISTES D’ADAPTATIONVINELINK ANNUAL DAYS - February 16, 2024 - ParisOur President Peter Hayes introduces the conference From 2000 to today, volumes of wine consumed worldwide have increased by 2.5%, but the biggest change is in wine consumption in producing countries. Indeed, consumption has decreased significantly in European producing countries (France, Italy, Spain) as well as in Chile and Argentina. The evolution has been rather positive in the consumption of non-wine producing countries, with the exception of the United States which, as producers, has recorded a further increase in its consumption over the last twenty years. The consequence of this evolution in consumption was the need for producing countries to export their wines: from 2003 to 2022, France recorded an increase in its exports of 109% and Italy of 193%.This complex and uncertain scenario is part of a context of strong evolution in wine consumption habits also linked to ongoing demographic developments.
